Basic Overview

An affordable, NZ made wireless system is now available for avoiding over-height incidents whereby a heavy vehicle may leave a work site in an over-height condition, risking a dangerous and expensive incident with a bridge or power lines.

A wireless, solar-battery powered beam-set is installed across the site exit to detect an extended boom or similar over-height situation. The driver is alerted by means of a bright flashing strobe light before the vehicle reaches a public road. The receiver-strobe box is typically mounted several metres ahead of the driver so that it will be seen in time.

The receiver-strobe box is powered by a 25W PV solar panel which provides more than enough power to keep its 12V battery charged year-round.

In addition to the driver being alerted, a wireless receiver located in the site-office, further alerts personnel that an over-height situation has been detected so they may quickly respond.

On-board Diagnostics

The site-office receiver has on-board diagnostics which raise awareness of any trouble condition that may have developed. For example, should one of the beam-units be knocked out of alignment, the receiver will display a “beam missing” indicator, accompanied by audible chirps. We recommend personnel are assigned to regularly check the health and operation of the system.

System Response
The beam response time is 0.08 seconds (under 1/10th of a second) Although relatively short, this false-alarm reducing feature determines the speed at which a narrow object can be reliably detected. In the case of a vehicle with a raised boom passing through the detection beam at say 8-10km/hr, the beam would typically be interrupted for many hundreds of milliseconds at least, thus reliably raising an alert. If better response times are required a number of things can be done such as installing the detection beam on an angled trajectory across the exit, or installing a speed hump. We can also provide a faster responding beam, however the trade off may be an increase in occasional bird-strike. (false alarms) Please call to discuss.
